FPL Demon / Knowledge base

Read the numbers. Find your move.

Understand expected points, spot playing-time risk and compare your next FPL move with confidence.

What do expected points mean?

Expected points (xPts) estimate a player's average FPL return across the possible outcomes of a fixture. A projection of 5.8 is not a promise of six points. The player could blank, haul or miss out. The number helps you compare your options before the match is played.

Use xPts to answer a football question: who looks stronger this week, which player has the better run, or whether a transfer looks worth the hit. A tiny difference is a close call, not a command to change your team.

What should you look at alongside xPts?

Demon's projections bring together expected playing time, player performance and fixture context to estimate FPL returns. Use that estimate alongside what you know about the player and your own team.

  • Playing time: a dangerous attacker still needs time on the pitch to deliver. Check fitness, rotation and likely involvement.
  • Fixtures: compare the next match and the weeks after it. A short-term punt and a longer-term pick can be different players.
  • Role: look for changes in position, attacking responsibility and set pieces. Recent goals alone do not tell the whole story.
  • Your team: price, free transfers, your bench and captaincy can change which move makes sense for you.

Minutes can change the decision

Expected minutes (xMins) describe estimated playing time. They are not a confirmed lineup or a guarantee that a player starts. Injury news, substitutions and rotation can all change the picture.

If you disagree with a player's minutes, adjust them in Planner and see how your comparison changes. Treat that as a what-if check. Raising the minutes does not make the player more likely to start in real life.

Check the latest team news before the deadline. Predicted lineups are useful context; confirmed lineups, when available, give you firmer information.

Make the comparison fair

  1. Compare the same gameweeks. One player's next-match score and another's five-week total answer different questions.
  2. Include the cost of your move. An illustrative three-point improvement does not cover an extra four-point transfer hit.
  3. Check who actually starts for you. An upgrade sitting on your bench may not improve your team's score.
  4. Keep your judgement. When projections are close, better minutes, useful fixtures or saving a transfer can decide it.

xPts, xG and xA are different things

xPts estimates FPL points for upcoming fixtures. Historical expected goals (xG) describe the quality of a player's past shooting chances; expected assists (xA) describe their chance creation. Use those statistics to understand performances, rather than reading them as future FPL points.

One blank does not make a sensible decision wrong, and one haul does not make every punt a good one. Look for repeatable opportunities across several weeks. Let the numbers sharpen your judgement.
