- Key team-news watch: De Bruyne is expected to be involved, Belgium miss midfield power, and Lukaku remains a dangerous minutes-risk name
Spain are favourites, but this is not a walkover. They have been the cleaner side in possession and the stronger defensive team, while Belgium arrive with enough attackers to turn one loose spell into a fantasy problem. That is why the numbers lean Spain, but still give Belgium a real route through.
For fantasy, the match is awkward in a good way. France have played already, so a lot of managers are staring at Mbappe's 13 points or Dembele's 10 points and wondering whether to touch the captain button again. With Mbappe, it is probably better to stick if you are protecting rank. With Dembele, twisting is more tempting, especially if you still have two decent captain routes before Messi as the safety net.
Yamal and Oyarzabal were frustrating against Portugal, but Belgium are a slightly softer defensive test. If you own them, this is not a dead spot. This could be the game where Yamal finally turns the threat into fantasy points, or where Oyarzabal gets his scoring touch back after the Portugal disappointment.
Belgium are harder to read because De Bruyne, Trossard, De Ketelaere and Lukaku all have routes to points, but the minutes are not equal. If you own De Bruyne, you are playing the creative route. If you own Trossard, you are trusting minutes. If you own De Ketelaere, you are backing form after the USA game. Lukaku is the scary one: he can score in 20 minutes, but his captain case changes massively if he starts.
Demon Team Projection
The team numbers explain the fantasy read. Spain have the stronger win chance, the better goal projection and the better clean-sheet route. Belgium are not dead, but their shield number is low enough that a Belgium clean sheet would be a proper swing, not the expected outcome.
Predicted Spain XI And R8 xPts
| Player | Pos | Price | R8 xPts | xPts/value | Fantasy note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unai Simon | GK | 5.0 | 4.7 | 0.94 | If you own him, the clean sheet is the play. Save points are a bonus. |
| Pedro Porro | DEF | 5.5 | 5.2 | 0.95 | If he starts for you, the appeal is clean sheet plus attacking full-back upside. |
| Pau Cubarsi | DEF | 5.0 | 5.3 | 1.06 | Strong if you already own him because the price/value route is excellent. |
| Aymeric Laporte | DEF | 5.5 | 5.5 | 1.00 | Safe defensive route with minutes and shield appeal. |
| Marc Cucurella | DEF | 5.1 | 5.5 | 1.08 | Best Spain defensive value on the table if he is in your XI. |
| Rodri | MID | 7.5 | 4.2 | 0.56 | Important for Spain, but usually not the exciting fantasy route. |
| Pedri | MID | 8.1 | 5.4 | 0.67 | Useful if you own him, but the ceiling is lower than Yamal or Oyarzabal. |
| Dani Olmo | MID | 7.7 | 5.1 | 0.66 | Scouting-bonus upside. One midfield return can turn this into a lovely captain twist. |
| Lamine Yamal | MID | 10.0 | 6.8 | 0.68 | Best Spain captain on the numbers. Is this finally the Yamal game? |
| Alex Baena | MID | 6.0 | 5.1 | 0.85 | Good value if you own him and the lineup confirms the start. |
| Mikel Oyarzabal | FWD | 8.1 | 6.2 | 0.77 | Big twist route if you are chasing and want the Spain goal scorer. |
Yamal is still the headline Spain twist because the role and upside are there. Oyarzabal is not far behind and gives you the striker route. Olmo is the fun one if you own him because low ownership plus midfield points can move rank quickly. Cucurella, Laporte and Cubarsi are more about whether the shield lands.
Predicted Belgium XI And R8 xPts
| Player | Pos | Price | R8 xPts | xPts/value | Fantasy note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thibaut Courtois | GK | 4.9 | 3.0 | 0.61 | If you own him, you are hoping for saves more than a clean sheet. |
| Timothy Castagne | DEF | 4.7 | 3.0 | 0.64 | Needs a stubborn Belgium defensive game to pay off. |
| Nathan Ngoy | DEF | 3.7 | 3.0 | 0.81 | Budget route, but the ceiling is not huge. |
| Brandon Mechele | DEF | 3.9 | 3.2 | 0.82 | Best Belgium defender value, but Spain's goal projection is a worry. |
| Maxim De Cuyper | DEF | 4.7 | 3.2 | 0.68 | Some attacking/set-piece route, but Yamal on his side is dangerous. |
| Youri Tielemans | MID | 6.1 | 4.0 | 0.66 | Set-piece and shot route. Interesting if Belgium get territory. |
| Kevin De Bruyne | MID | 7.5 | 4.6 | 0.61 | Best Belgium twist if he starts and you are chasing the upset. |
| Leandro Trossard | MID | 6.6 | 4.0 | 0.61 | Good minutes route, especially if Belgium counter well. |
| Charles De Ketelaere | MID | 5.6 | 3.8 | 0.68 | Form route after the USA game. If you own him, he is live for another return. |
| Jeremy Doku | MID | 7.5 | 3.2 | 0.43 | Can cause chaos, but he needs the final action to make fantasy managers happy. |
| Romelu Lukaku | FWD | 7.4 | 2.3 | 0.31 | Dangerous finisher. If he starts, the whole captain conversation changes. |
Belgium's best fantasy case is not a clean sheet. It is De Bruyne finding a final ball, Trossard getting minutes, De Ketelaere continuing his form, or Lukaku turning a short spell into another goal. If Lukaku starts, he becomes much more interesting. If he is on the bench again, he is a scary but risky captain twist.
Best Captain Shouts
| Rank | Player | Team | R8 xPts | Captain read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lamine Yamal | Spain | 6.8 | Best twist in the tie. The Portugal blank was annoying, but the role is still strong. |
| 2 | Mikel Oyarzabal | Spain | 6.2 | Very usable twist if you need upside and want the Spain striker route. |
| 3 | Pedri | Spain | 5.4 | Safer midfield floor, lower explosive ceiling than Yamal. |
| 4 | Dani Olmo | Spain | 5.1 | Exciting if you own him. Scouting bonus plus one midfield return can become a haul. |
| 5 | Kevin De Bruyne | Belgium | 4.6 | Best Belgium armband if you are chasing the upset. |
The simple answer is this: Mbappe's 13 is a stick for most managers, especially if you are protecting rank. Dembele's 10 is trickier. Ten points is strong, but if you still own Yamal or Oyarzabal here and Messi later, twisting is not crazy. You have a safety net. Just do not twist because you are bored. Twist because the next captain genuinely has a route to beat it.
Clean Sheet Shield Watch
| Player | Team | R8 xPts | xPts/value | Shield read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marc Cucurella | Spain | 5.5 | 1.08 | Best value shield route in the fixture. |
| Pau Cubarsi | Spain | 5.3 | 1.06 | Cheap Spain clean-sheet cover. |
| Aymeric Laporte | Spain | 5.5 | 1.00 | Safe minutes and strong defensive base. |
| Pedro Porro | Spain | 5.2 | 0.95 | Attacking defender route, but check he starts. |
| Unai Simon | Spain | 4.7 | 0.94 | Fine keeper route, but Spain defenders look better. |
| Brandon Mechele | Belgium | 3.2 | 0.82 | Cheap value, but the Belgium shield number is weak. |
Spain are the shield side. A 36.8% clean-sheet chance is not massive, but it is much stronger than Belgium's 14.7%. If you played Clean Sheet Shield on Spain defenders, you are in a decent position. It is not a lock, but it is the right side of this fixture. Belgium defenders are more about survival and set-piece chaos than a clean shield route.
Our call is Spain 2-1 Belgium. Spain have the better structure, better shield route and the stronger captain twists in Yamal and Oyarzabal. Belgium have enough quality to hurt them, especially if De Bruyne starts and Lukaku gets meaningful minutes, but from a live fantasy view this is a game where Spain owners should feel confident without pretending it is safe.
