South Africa Make History As South Korea Sweat

World Cup Fantasy Demon Notes South Africa South Korea guide card

South Africa have made history. After that horrible opening game against Mexico, they have somehow reached the round of 32 by beating South Korea 1-0. It was not glamorous, but it was massive.

Thapelo Maseko scored the winner, Ronwen Williams and the back line held on, and South Korea were left with a nervous wait as a third-placed side. For fantasy, though, this is where we separate good stories from good picks.

Here are the Demon Notes from South Africa 1-0 South Korea: Maseko's goal, South Africa's first knockout qualification, South Korea's third-place stress and whether either side deserves qualification-booster trust.

South Africa 1-0 South Korea

  • Goal: Thapelo Maseko
  • Assist: Tshepang Moremi
  • Key story: South Africa finished second in Group A and qualified for the round of 32 for the first time
  • South Korea story: South Korea finished third with three points and must wait on the third-place table
  • Fantasy story: Maseko is the cheap name, but South Africa are not a team to blindly booster stack

Demon Notes

  • Maseko (£4.2m) led the match for shots and touches in the box. If you want one South Africa fantasy name, it is him.
  • South Africa won with just 31.5% possession. That is heroic, but it is not usually a profile we want to stack in fantasy.
  • Ronwen Williams (£4.5m) got the clean sheet, but South Korea still had enough pressure that this was more grind than comfort.
  • South Korea had 68.5% possession and still failed to score. That is the problem: lots of ball, not enough killer edge.
  • Son (£7.4m) coming off the bench tells you everything about the uncertainty. You cannot pay premium money for a player whose role is unclear.

Qualification And Round Of 32 Angle

South Africa are through as Group A runners-up and that is brilliant for them. But for the qualification booster, I would not treat them as bankers. They are a story team, not a high-probability fantasy stack.

South Korea are currently relying on the third-place table. Even if they sneak through, they are not a team I want to load up on unless the draw somehow gives them a miracle path.

Verdict: enjoy South Africa, maybe punt Maseko, but do not build a booster core around them. South Korea are a wait-and-see at best.
