Canada Fantasy Picks: Eustaquio Winner And R16 Route

28 June 2026

World Cup Fantasy Demon Notes South Africa Canada guide card

Canada did not make it pretty, but they made it historic. South Africa sat in, Canada kept pushing, and Stephen Eustaquio smashed the winner in stoppage time to send the co-hosts into the last 16.

For World Cup Fantasy, this is where Canada become more than a nice group-stage story. They are through, but the next round is a much harder read. Netherlands or Morocco is not the kind of route where you blindly stack Canada players.

Here are the Demon Notes from South Africa 0-1 Canada: Eustaquio's late winner, Jonathan David blanking, South Africa going out, and why Canada assets are probably players to be careful with before R16.

South Africa 0-1 Canada

  • Goal: Stephen Eustaquio, 90+2
  • Assist/key action: Alistair Johnston cross before the South Africa clearance dropped to Eustaquio
  • Canada advance to the Round of 16
  • South Africa are eliminated
  • R16 path: Canada face Netherlands or Morocco
  • Fantasy story: good Canada moment, awkward next fixture

Demon Notes

  • Canada deserved the win on chance quality. ESPN had them at 1.32 xG, seven shots on goal and four big chances.
  • South Africa had more possession, but it was sterile. One shot on goal and 0.13 xG tells the fantasy story.
  • Eustaquio is the headline, but his fantasy appeal is still more floor than explosion. Set pieces and minutes are useful, but he is not suddenly a premium captain.
  • The clean sheet was good, but this is not a green light to load up. Canada were solid against South Africa; Netherlands or Morocco is a different level of test.
  • Jonathan David blanking is annoying, not fatal. He remains the Canada attacker with the best ceiling, but the next opponent is a real step up.

R16 Fantasy Angle

Canada now face either Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16. That is not a soft route. It means Qualification Booster managers should be careful with Canada picks, and if you already own them, this is probably the point where you start looking at exits rather than adding more.

Clean Sheet Shield is not the angle either. Canada limited South Africa well, but the R16 opponent should carry much more attacking threat. The win was impressive; the fantasy route is still awkward.

Verdict: do not stack Canada. Jonathan David is the only one you would seriously think about holding for ceiling, and even then it depends on your squad. Eustaquio is a nice story and a set-piece watch, but this looks more like a sell/avoid spot than a buying spot.
