What Makes A Good Scouting Pick?
A scouting pick is not just a random differential. You want a player with a reason to score points: good xPts, useful price, low ownership, strong minutes, a set-piece route, goal involvement, or a clean-sheet path.
The key idea is simple: lower xPts can still be useful if the player is cheaper, lower owned, or easier to fit into your squad. A 5.0 xPts player at 4.5% ownership can move your rank more than a 6.8 xPts player everyone already owns.
| Rank | Player | Team | Pos | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | G | A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lucas Digne | France | DEF | 5.0 | 5.3 | 1.06 | 4.5% | 0 | 0 |
| 2 | Alex Baena | Spain | MID | 6.0 | 5.1 | 0.85 | 4.5% | 1 | 1 |
| 3 | Dani Olmo | Spain | MID | 7.7 | 5.1 | 0.66 | 2.4% | 0 | 1 |
| 4 | Anthony Gordon | England | MID | 7.0 | 5.0 | 0.71 | 3.5% | 0 | 2 |
| 5 | Enzo Fernandez | Argentina | MID | 7.5 | 5.0 | 0.67 | 3.8% | 1 | 0 |
| 6 | Kevin De Bruyne | Belgium | MID | 7.5 | 4.6 | 0.61 | 4.3% | 1 | 1 |
| 7 | Nahuel Molina | Argentina | DEF | 4.4 | 4.6 | 1.05 | 4.7% | 0 | 0 |
| 8 | Nicolas Tagliafico | Argentina | DEF | 4.3 | 4.6 | 1.07 | 0.9% | 0 | 0 |
| 9 | Breel Embolo | Switzerland | FWD | 7.5 | 4.3 | 0.57 | 1.6% | 2 | 2 |
| 10 | Adrien Rabiot | France | MID | 6.4 | 4.3 | 0.67 | 0.8% | 0 | 1 |
1. Lucas Digne
Opponent:Morocco
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Shield | Fantasy route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| France | Morocco | 5.0 | 5.3 | 1.06 | 4.5% | 43.2% | Clean sheet plus crossing/set-piece threat |
Digne is the classic defender scouting pick. His raw xPts is not elite-attacker level, but his value is strong because defenders are cheaper and can score through clean sheets. France also have a 43.2% Clean Sheet Shield chance against Morocco.
The risk is minutes. Digne is projected for 75 xMins, not 90. That means he is not as safe as Saliba or Upamecano, but at low ownership he can still be useful if you need a differential defender.
2. Alex Baena
Opponent:Belgium
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | Belgium | 6.0 | 5.1 | 0.85 | 4.5% | 1 | 1 |
Baena is interesting because he is cheaper than the premium Spain attackers. He has one goal, one assist and a 5.1 xPts projection, which is a nice profile for a 6.0m midfielder.
The question is not whether he is better than Yamal. He is not. The question is whether he gives you enough Spain attacking exposure while saving money. If the answer is yes, that is exactly how value works.
3. Dani Olmo
Opponent:Belgium
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | Belgium | 7.7 | 5.1 | 0.66 | 2.4% | 0 | 1 |
Olmo is low owned and has a good role if he starts, but his value score is not as strong as Baena's because he costs more. That is why looking at price and xPts together matters.
He is more of a football pick than a pure spreadsheet pick. If you think he starts and Spain create chances between the lines, he can beat his ownership. If you only want value per million, Baena is cleaner.
4. Anthony Gordon
Opponent:Norway
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| England | Norway | 7.0 | 5.0 | 0.71 | 3.5% | 0 | 2 |
Gordon gives you England attacking exposure without paying Kane or Bellingham money. The two assists are important because they show he can return without needing to be the main goalscorer.
The risk is that England v Norway is close. England are only a narrow favourite, so Gordon is not a safe pick. He is a rank-mover pick if you believe England score and he starts wide.
5. Enzo Fernandez
Opponent:Switzerland
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Argentina | Switzerland | 7.5 | 5.0 | 0.67 | 3.8% | 1 | 0 |
Enzo is a steady Argentina route. He is not Messi, but he benefits from Argentina's team projection and has already scored in the tournament. At 3.8% ownership, that makes him a possible midfield differential.
For a beginner, the read is simple: Enzo is not a captain pick, but he can be a squad pick if you want Argentina coverage and cannot afford every premium attacker.
6. Kevin De Bruyne
Opponent:Spain
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belgium | Spain | 7.5 | 4.6 | 0.61 | 4.3% | 1 | 1 |
De Bruyne is lower than you might expect because Belgium face Spain, and Spain are the stronger side in the market. But KDB is still KDB: chance creation, final pass and set-piece involvement always give him a route.
This is where xPts helps you avoid name bias. De Bruyne is a great footballer, but 4.6 xPts tells you the fixture is difficult. He is a brave differential, not a safe template pick.
7. Nahuel Molina
Opponent:Switzerland
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Shield | Fantasy route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Argentina | Switzerland | 4.4 | 4.6 | 1.05 | 4.7% | 42.7% | Cheap clean-sheet route |
Molina is not exciting from goals and assists, but fantasy defenders do not always need to be exciting. At 4.4m, he only needs a clean sheet and minutes to become useful value.
Argentina's 42.7% Shield chance gives him a clear path. If he starts, he is one of the easier cheap defenders to understand: low price, low ownership, decent team route.
8. Nicolas Tagliafico
Opponent:Switzerland
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Shield | Fantasy route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Argentina | Switzerland | 4.3 | 4.6 | 1.07 | 0.9% | 42.7% | Very low-owned defender route |
Tagliafico is even lower owned than Molina and slightly cheaper. His xPts per million is strong, but the start is the key. If he is in the XI, he becomes a very interesting cheap Argentina defender.
This is the type of pick where you wait for lineups if possible. The value is there, but only if the minutes are there.
9. Breel Embolo
Opponent:Argentina
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switzerland | Argentina | 7.5 | 4.3 | 0.57 | 1.6% | 2 | 2 |
Embolo has two goals and two assists, so the output is real. The reason he is not higher is the opponent: Switzerland face Argentina, which makes the attacking route much harder.
He is a proper differential if you think Switzerland can hurt Argentina. But if you want safe xPts, this is not the pick. This is a game-state and upset bet.
10. Adrien Rabiot
Opponent:Morocco
| Team | Opponent | Price | xPts | xPts/m | Own | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| France | Morocco | 6.4 | 4.3 | 0.67 | 0.8% | 0 | 1 |
Rabiot is not a glamorous fantasy pick. The reason he appears is price, minutes and France team strength. He is cheap enough to be useful, but his attacking ceiling is lower than the wingers and forwards.
For newer managers, this is the difference between a fine filler and a priority pick. Rabiot can help a squad fit, but you should not expect him to play like Mbappe, Dembele or Olise.
Final Read
The best scouting picks are not always the highest raw xPts. Digne, Molina and Tagliafico are good examples because their defender value is strong. Baena and Gordon are good examples because they are cheaper attacking routes. De Bruyne and Embolo are different: more risky, but lower owned and capable of punishing the template.
