Portugal v Spain Preview
- Fixture: Portugal v Spain, World Cup round of 16
- Demon verdict: Spain 2-1 Portugal
- Demon advance chance: Spain 67.4%, Portugal 32.6%
- Demon shield chance: Spain 32.1%, Portugal 19.6%
- Main fantasy decision: captain switch to Yamal, Oyarzabal or Ronaldo
- Clean Sheet Shield angle: Spain defenders have the better route, but Portugal still carry enough goal threat to make it nervy
- Key battle: Lamine Yamal v Nuno Mendes on Spain's right side
The football read is simple: Spain are the cleaner side, Portugal have the individual punch. Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, Nuno Mendes and Diogo Costa are the core Portugal fantasy names, while Spain's likely XI keeps Lamine Yamal, Oyarzabal, Pedri, Rodri and the Porro/Cucurella full-back routes live. The Yamal v Nuno Mendes duel is one of the matchups that can swing the tie.
From a fantasy point of view, this is no longer really about buying players. The gameweek has started. The useful question is whether your captain needs to move, and whether your Clean Sheet Shield still has a live route. Spain are stronger across the XI, but Portugal still have Ronaldo (10.0) on the end of crosses, Bruno (8.5) around set plays and Leao (7.8) attacking space. If Spain score first, Yamal and Oyarzabal can become captaincy-level picks. If Portugal make it transitional, Ronaldo can punish one moment.
Demon Team Projection
Spain's numbers are better on both sides of the ball. The 67.4% advance chance says Demon expects Spain to control enough of the game to progress, while the 32.1% shield chance makes their defenders more playable than Portugal's. That is why Porro, Cucurella, Laporte, Cubarsi and Unai Simon all sit above most Portugal defenders in the xPts table.
Predicted Portugal XI And R16 xPts
| Player | Pos | Price | R16 xPts | Fantasy note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diogo Costa | GK | 4.9 | 4.0 | Save route, but Spain's shield number is much stronger. |
| João Cancelo | DEF | 5.3 | 3.3 | Attacking full-back upside, but difficult clean-sheet profile. |
| Rúben Dias | DEF | 5.0 | 4.6 | Best Portugal centre-back route if you need a defender. |
| Renato Veiga | DEF | 4.3 | 4.6 | Cheap starter route if confirmed, but still a risky shield pick. |
| Nuno Mendes | DEF | 5.8 | 4.7 | Massive defensive job against Yamal, but carries counter-attacking threat. |
| João Neves | MID | 6.5 | 4.4 | Minutes and ball-winning floor, less explosive for fantasy. |
| Vitinha | MID | 6.4 | 3.6 | Good footballer, awkward fantasy profile in this matchup. |
| Pedro Neto | MID | 6.4 | 4.7 | Direct runner, but role and end product need checking. |
| Bruno Fernandes | MID | 8.5 | 5.5 | Best Portugal midfield pick because of set plays and final-third involvement. |
| Rafael Leão | MID | 7.8 | 5.7 | Portugal's best transition runner and a proper differential. |
| Cristiano Ronaldo | FWD | 10.0 | 7.6 | Main Portugal route to a haul. Expensive, but still the clearest goal threat. |
Predicted Spain XI And R16 xPts
| Player | Pos | Price | R16 xPts | Fantasy note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unai Simón | GK | 5.0 | 5.6 | Safer keeper route than Costa because Spain's shield number is stronger. |
| Pedro Porro | DEF | 5.5 | 6.6 | Best Spain defender for attacking upside plus shield chance. |
| Pau Cubarsí | DEF | 5.0 | 6.0 | Strong value if he starts, but watch final team news. |
| Aymeric Laporte | DEF | 5.5 | 6.1 | Clean-sheet route and set-piece presence. |
| Marc Cucurella | DEF | 5.1 | 6.2 | One of the best value defenders in the match. |
| Pedri | MID | 8.1 | 6.2 | Classy floor pick, but not as explosive as Yamal or Oyarzabal. |
| Rodri | MID | 7.5 | 5.7 | Minutes and control, but lower ceiling than Spain's attackers. |
| Dani Olmo | MID | 7.7 | 6.9 | Good xPts if he starts, especially if Spain dominate territory. |
| Lamine Yamal | MID | 10.0 | 8.8 | Top Spain pick. Yamal v Mendes is the fantasy battle of the match. |
| Mikel Oyarzabal | FWD | 8.1 | 8.5 | Huge value if he leads the line. Strong xPts without the premium price. |
| Álex Baena | MID | 6.0 | 7.2 | Cheap route into Spain's attack if he starts. |
Captain Switch Watch
| Rank | Player | Team | Price | R16 xPts | Captain read |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lamine Yamal | Spain | 10.0 | 8.8 | Best blend of role, form and team strength. The aggressive captain switch. |
| 2 | Mikel Oyarzabal | Spain | 8.1 | 8.5 | Huge xPts if he starts through the middle. Strong captain option without the Ronaldo price tag. |
| 3 | Cristiano Ronaldo | Portugal | 10.0 | 7.6 | Riskier because Spain are favourites, but still Portugal's clearest goal route. |
| 4 | Dani Olmo | Spain | 7.7 | 6.9 | Good if confirmed in the XI, but less obvious than Yamal/Oyarzabal. |
| 5 | Álex Baena | Spain | 6.0 | 7.2 | Excellent xPts if he starts, but check the actual XI before trusting him. |
If you are chasing a captain return, Yamal is the cleanest switch. Oyarzabal is the value route if he starts. Ronaldo is the emotional and upside play, but the numbers say Spain are much more likely to control the tie. If your current captain has already returned well, you do not have to force the Ronaldo gamble.
Clean Sheet Shield Watch
| Player | Team | Price | R16 xPts | Shield read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pedro Porro | Spain | 5.5 | 6.6 | Best mix of attacking upside and Spain's 32.1% shield chance. |
| Marc Cucurella | Spain | 5.1 | 6.2 | Strong value route if Spain control the left side. |
| Aymeric Laporte | Spain | 5.5 | 6.1 | Clean-sheet route plus set-piece presence. |
| Pau Cubarsí | Spain | 5.0 | 6.0 | Good value if named in the XI. |
| Unai Simón | Spain | 5.0 | 5.6 | Keeper route with Spain's stronger shield number. |
| Nuno Mendes | Portugal | 5.8 | 4.7 | Portugal's best defensive upside, but the shield chance is only 19.6%. |
For Clean Sheet Shield, Spain are the side to trust. A 32.1% shield chance is not a lock, because Portugal have Ronaldo, Leao and Bruno, but it is still clearly better than Portugal's 19.6%. If you are counting on shield returns, Porro and Cucurella are the most useful names because they can still add attacking points if the clean sheet goes.
Our call is Spain 2-1 Portugal. Spain should have more control, more territory and the better defensive base, but Portugal have enough individual quality that you should not call this a free clean sheet. For fantasy, that means Yamal or Oyarzabal for captaincy, Spain defenders for shield hope, and Ronaldo as the high-risk/high-emotion switch.
