Mexico Fantasy Picks: Quinones, Jimenez And R16 Route

1 July 2026

World Cup Fantasy Demon Notes Mexico Ecuador guide card

Mexico are into the last 16, and this was a proper fantasy tick. The 2-0 scoreline was not just about getting through; it backed up the two main reads we liked before the tie: Mexico's defence and Julian Quinones.

Quinones scored the opener, Raul Jimenez smashed in the second, and Mexico kept yet another clean sheet. Ecuador had possession, but Mexico had the sharper first-half punch and then defended the box like a team built for knockout football.

Here are the Demon Notes from Mexico 2-0 Ecuador: Quinones delivering again, Jimenez staying alive as a forward option, the Mexico defence hitting, Ecuador dropping out, and why the R16 wait now depends on England v DR Congo.

Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

  • Goals: Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez
  • Assists: Roberto Alvarado and Julian Quinones
  • Mexico kept their fourth clean sheet of the tournament
  • Ecuador are out, so their players are no longer fantasy options
  • Mexico will face England or DR Congo in R16

Julian QuinonesMexicoFWDGoal + assist3 tournament goals and 1 assistThe best Mexico attacker right now. He is no longer just a punt; he is the form route.
Raul JimenezMexicoFWDGoalSecond Mexico goal, finished powerfullyStill useful if he starts, but Quinones has the hotter fantasy profile.
Roberto AlvaradoMexicoMIDAssistThree assists in the tournamentA sneaky creator if you need a cheaper Mexico route.

Demon Notes

  • The Mexico defence call landed. Ecuador had the ball for long spells, but Mexico protected the middle and gave up very little in the second half.
  • Quinones was the big win. A goal and assist in a knockout match is exactly the kind of fantasy return that changes how seriously we treat him.
  • Jimenez scoring keeps him in the conversation, but he is not automatically ahead of Quinones. The form and price route matter.
  • Alvarado is worth noting because creators can be underpriced in fantasy. If he is starting and still supplying chances, he gives Mexico another route into points.
  • Ecuador's tournament is done. Do not carry Ecuador players into R16 plans.
  • Mexico are through, but the R16 opponent is still England or DR Congo. That means the exact xPts, Advance % and Shield % should wait until the fixture is fixed.

What It Means For R16

Mexico have done their job, but fantasy managers should not treat the R16 fixture as settled yet. They get the winner of England v DR Congo, so the next step is to wait for one confirmed opponent before deciding how aggressive to be.

If the route lands kindly, the first Mexico names to check are Quinones, Jimenez, Rangel, Vasquez and Gallardo. If England come through, the clean-sheet case becomes more dangerous. If DR Congo come through, Mexico's defence and Shield angle may look much stronger.

My advice: do not sell Mexico players just because the xPts says TBC. That is the right behaviour while the opponent is unknown. Keep the shortlist ready, then move once the England v DR Congo result and market odds are in.
