Germany Out: Paraguay Penalty Shock And R16 Fantasy Fallout

30 June 2026

World Cup Fantasy Demon Notes Germany Paraguay guide card

Germany are out. Paraguay dragged the tie into extra time, held their nerve from the spot, and turned one of the strongest pre-match fantasy routes into a hard stop.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead late in the first half, Kai Havertz equalised from a Florian Wirtz cross, then Orlando Gill became the shootout story with two penalty saves. Jose Canale scored the sudden-death penalty after Jonathan Tah missed, and Paraguay won 4-3 on penalties.

For fantasy, the message is simple: Germany players are no longer R16 picks. Havertz got the goal, Wirtz got the assist, Kimmich scored his penalty, but none of that matters now if you are building for the next round.

Demon Notes

  • Demon and the wider market had Germany as clear favourites before kick-off. That qualification call missed. Knockout football does this.
  • The Shield read was not the problem. Germany only conceded one goal, so the 0-or-1-goal Shield logic was fine.
  • The problem was the advance angle. Germany had enough territory and chance volume, but Paraguay survived the match and won the penalty moments.
  • This is exactly why R16 planning has to move quickly. Once a favourite goes out, the points are gone with them.
  • Paraguay deserve credit. They did not need to outplay Germany for 120 minutes; they needed to survive, defend the box, and win the moments.
  • Gill is the headline fantasy name from the match, but the next opponent is likely much harder than Germany made Paraguay look in long spells.

R16 Fantasy Angle

Germany assets should be moved on. Havertz, Wirtz, Kimmich, Musiala, Rudiger, Tah and the rest are no longer useful for R16 fantasy because Germany have no fixture.

Paraguay are through, but this is not a green-light stack. They now move into the France/Sweden side of the bracket, so the fantasy angle is more about cheap survival punts than loading up.

Enciso is the attacking name to remember, Gill is the story if you want a keeper punt, and Canale has the romantic knockout moment. Still, if Paraguay draw France, the Clean Sheet Shield case is fragile.
